JOIN OUR FARM CREW
Job Description:
FARM CREW: This is a short term position, beginning in April and ending in late November, 24-32 hours a week, 3-4 days a week. There will be seasonal variation in our work day, but we typically start at 8am (shifting to 7am in summer) with end times adjusting based on start time and work flow. $20/hour starting hourly pay, with raises possible based on experience and performance. Paid 30 minute lunch, annual gear cost reimbursement of up to $100, and veggies galore!
This position will encompass all farm tasks. You will harvest, wash veggies, plant, weed, trellis, seed in the greenhouse, do field clean up, drive trucks and help with just about every aspect of farm operations over the course of the season. We stick to a regular weekly schedule that shifts as we enter the main season, so you will know what to expect when you come to work each day (ie: harvesting Monday & Tuesday, Friday & Saturday, field work on Wednesdays and Thursday).
This is a great role for someone looking to build a skill base in small scale intensive veggie production. We have our own production systems in place, excellent tools at our disposal, and are constantly working to improve efficiency in our protocols and methods,. Contributions from team members are always welcome. You can expect to work with 1-3 people on any given task.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
Harvest. We usually harvest 2-4 days a week. It is a large percentage of the work on our farm, and you will spend a lot of time picking, bunching and loading beautiful veggies! Harvest activities include harvesting of vegetables using sharp knives, washing and packing vegetables to order, maintaining quality and food safety standards, and cleaning up at the end of the day.
Field work. In addition to harvest, you will be involved in the wide range of other farming tasks that happen week to week. This includes transplanting, crop maintenance (trellising, weeding etc), and other field chores like spreading fertility, using small engines to weed whack, till, hill or pulling old crops.
Other duties. There are some regular chores we will do weekly, including washing totes/bins that while not seemingly related to agriculture are important tasks to maintain food safety.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Our ideal candidate will have farming experience or experience with outdoor/ physical labor, competitive athletics, basic knowledge of vegetables or experience in a restaurant kitchen.
Farming is physical work and requires the ability to repeatedly bend and lift 40-50# safely off the ground and to be on your feet all day. You will often be sore, tired and hot or cold depending on the season. Being ok with this discomfort and maintaining a good attitude is essential.
Attention to detail, ability to take direction, asking questions when you are unsure about something, and being receptive to feedback from all team members are required qualities for this position. We know that farm work is skilled labor and it takes time to master each task; approaching the work with a learning mindset and an intention toward improvement are key attributes we look for in our coworkers.
There is a lot of precision and repetition in farm work. You need to be able to stay focused and engaged while doing the same task for a period of time.
The ability to focus and work with a sense of urgency is key as our lists are long and the days are short. We try to make the most of our time.
Being game for unfamiliar or new tasks and able to have a positive and driven attitude when things are hard will make you successful on the farm.
You must have reliable transportation to and from the farm. Our farm is located in Canby.
